Last week, environmental scientists from Wey Engineering assisted colleagues from Artemis Environmental Services, Inc. in conducting Florida Scrub Jay surveys in Charlotte County. The Florida Scrub Jay is a federally threatened bird species found exclusively in Florida, making it the only bird species endemic to the state. These birds live in family groups typically made up of a breeding pair and their offspring from previous seasons, who stay on as helpers to raise younger siblings. Their preferred habitat includes xeric scrub, sand pine, and scrubby flatwoods. During the five-day survey, scientists from both teams successfully observed and documented a family of four scrub jays at one of the designated sites.
