As Christmas approaches once again, I find myself reflecting on its deeper meaning this year. It’s easy to speed through the days, pausing briefly for family and friends during the holidays, only to slip back into our routines. Too often, we take the people in our lives for granted, as if tomorrow is promised. As my family gets smaller, the connections I share with those who remain feel even more precious.

I’m not immune to overlooking the value of time spent with loved ones. Christmas serves as a reminder—a chance to reflect, reconnect, and refocus on what truly matters. In the rush to buy gifts, we sometimes forget that the most meaningful thing we can offer is our presence.

In the coming year, I’m committing to spending more time with the people who matter most and less energy-chasing things.

Pairing New Tech with Vintage Glass: My Adventure at the NYS Fair

It’s that time of year again—NYS Fair season! While I’m not exactly a fan of the endless parking struggles or navigating through the sea of fairgoers, it’s a fantastic playground for testing out gear. For those who follow my escapades, you know I have a bit of a thing for vintage equipment. I love seeing how older gear stacks up today, and this time, I decided to mix things up with my daily driver, the Canon R3, and a classic from 2005—a Canon 24-105mm F4 lens I snagged for just $200.

Now, let’s be honest—the R3 is Canon’s powerhouse flagship camera, and pairing it with a lens that’s old enough to legally vote might sound like an odd choice. But here's the twist: my journey back into photography has been all about rediscovering that you don’t need the latest and greatest gear to create something amazing. Sure, having the newest toys is nice, but guess what? You can still get the job done beautifully with inexpensive, used gear.

Case in point: the Canon R8 is currently one of the most underrated cameras out there. It’s a fantastic body you can snag for around $1,000. Pair it with a high-quality older lens, and suddenly, you’ve got a combo that packs a punch without breaking the bank. And let’s not forget the older Canon 5D bodies—these gems are going for just a few hundred bucks and still deliver stunning results. Talk about value!

Back at the fair, my throwback setup was surprisingly lightweight compared to my usual heavy-duty glass. It was a breath of fresh air (quite literally, considering the weight off my shoulders) to roam the grounds with a simpler, more agile setup. This experience was a fun reminder that creativity isn’t confined by the price tag of your gear.
