Press Release:
SOUTH AVENUE STRUCTURE FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION
Syracuse, NY – On Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 11:16 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 130 South Avenue. Crews from Station 3 on Bellevue Avenue arrived on scene and found a two-story residential structure with heavy smoke issuing from the first and second floors. A Signal "99" was transmitted, indicating a working fire.
Firefighters stretched hose lines into the structure while additional crews searched for occupants. As firefighters advanced through the interior, encountering heat and heavy smoke, they located a fire in the basement and began extinguishment operations. During the initial fire attack, it was determined that repositioning crews to the exterior to flow water directly into the basement would provide the quickest and safest means of knocking down the fire. At that time, firefighters were advised that all occupants were accounted for. Once the bulk of the fire had been extinguished and conditions in the basement improved, crews re-entered the structure to extinguish remaining hot spots and check for fire extension.
The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and declared fully extinguished after approximately 50 minutes. Thorough searches confirmed there were no victims. The structure was a single-family home occupied by six residents. The basement sustained significant fire damage, while smoke and water damage extended throughout the remainder of the home. The American Red Cross assisted the displaced occupants.
According to Syracuse Fire Investigators, the cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries. Firefighters remained on scene for more than four hours conducting overhaul operations, ventilating the structure, and assisting investigators.

OVERNIGHT STRUCTURE FIRE CONTAINED TO GARAGE; NO INJURIES REPORTED
Syracuse, NY – On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 2:03 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were dispatched by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire at 453 Durston Avenue. Crews from Station 9 on Shuart Avenue arrived on scene and found smoke coming from the attached garage of a single-story residential home. Engine 9 stretched a hose line while Truck 4 assisted with advancing the initial line and began searching for occupants. A Signal "99" was transmitted, indicating a working fire.
Firefighters located fire in the garage and began extinguishment operations while additional teams searched the residence for potential victims. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes and declared fully extinguished after approximately 20 minutes. Thorough searches confirmed there were no victims.
The structure was a single-family home occupied by one individual. Working smoke detectors alerted the occupant, allowing them to safely exit before firefighters arrived. The garage sustained smoke and fire damage, but firefighters prevented the fire from extending into the living space, which suffered only minor smoke damage.
According to Syracuse Fire Investigators, the fire will be classified as accidental. It originated in the garage and was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
Crews remained on scene for more than two hours extinguishing remaining hot spots and completing overhaul operations. Once those operations were complete, the scene was turned back over to the occupant, who was able to return to the home.
