AI is changing the playing field. Traditional PRs and academics like me are being challenged to inform AI, use AI, tout AI, and yet all we truly desire is for America to increase its level of literacy. How important is true literacy? Well, if you're not familiar with the topic of literacy through the ages, that's a history reference, you may not know why it's so important. If you don't have prior knowledge of world history and politics from the ancient to modern periods you're likely in the dark.

So why is literacy important? Number one on my list has to do with having the power of self-determination. What's that you ask? Self-determination means that you have the knowledge required to navigate this life and make your own informed choices. If you don't have this knowledge you will undoubtedly come to rely upon someone, something, or some organization to guide you, keep you housed, fed, healthy, working, etcetera. In this instance, you have no power over your life. Your life choices are made for you. It's difficult enough to not find our thoughts hijacked by the daily barrage of inputs we allow via social media, society, and various kinds of organizations. How can we stop this backward progression of American society?

The challenge seems so clear. Why then have we not fixed the problem?

You may say that we all possess the freedom to choose what we wish in this American life, and that some choose to not be involved in creating literacy. Whatever your reasoning, this laissez-faire attitude Americans possess is doing our society a disservice.
What is a laissez-faire attitude? I challenge you to look up the term laissez-faire. You will find that in many instances it is the same as laziness and complacency. You will also find that it means something akin to having a very relaxed attitude or outlook, lacking structure and discipline.

So America, what will we do about our literacy challenge and the dumbing down of our entire society? Ask yourselves, do you like being lorded over? Do you enjoy not having a multitude of choices in life? Do you know what happens when an entire society cannot read and write?
