Artist's Statement:

"Natural Roots: Sunflower Bliss" is the second piece in the "Natural Roots" series. The focus of this series is to examine, appreciate, and build conversation around black hair and how it is precieved in this county. "Sunflower Bliss" is dedicated to the black women who embrace their natural hair as the crowns they are. The empowerment of choosing what she naturally possesses over conforming to European beauty standards. How in doing this it radiates power, joy, and confidence that can be felt in every space she enter. How can you not smile when in the presence of such blissfulness.

The use of sunflowers is due to the nature of the flower. How they seem to radiate warmth and joy. Not only that but when confronted with a lack of natural sunlight they will turn towards each other and bask in their radiance.
