SEA BOOTS ENCOUNTERS A VERY LARGE WHITE SHARK
While dolphin fishing south of Summerland Key in theFl Keys Captain Sharpe spotted two man-O-war birds circling in one area. We trolled over to see what they were looking at and spotted a 4 x8 sheet of plywood floating on the surface. On the first pass we hooked up with three nice dolphin. On the next pass we spotted something very large under the plywood. At first we thought it might be a school of fish. As we got closer we realized it was a very large shark. Wrong color to be a whale shark, as we got even closer I realized it was a great white shark, truly a monster. I have seen many white sharks off the Fl Keys but this one was in the top three largest sharks I have ever encountered in my 68 years of professional sport fishing in the Gulf Stream. Three times the great white approached the boat, on the third time SHE ate our flat line 20 feet off the stern. And the fight began. Realizing the 50 Wide Penn Int was no contest for this monster we broke the line 30 minutes into the fight. My angler Richard Mithoff from Texas has fished with me for about 30 years. I told him not to many anglers can say they hooked up an fought a great white shark. Looking at the girth on tis fish I would say she was pregnant and headed up in to the Gulf to have her young. I would say she was at least six feet wide across her back weighing in excess of 3000 lbs and 18 feet in length. Unfortunately she stayed to deep to get a good picture, frankly we were to amazed to think about pictures. She will always live in our memory..
