🌿 Deck Plants That Return Bigger Every Year 🌿

Over the past few years, we have changed our approach to decorating the deck.

Instead of relying mostly on seasonal flowers, we have started using plants that provide lasting structure and return even stronger each year.

On the shady side of the deck, hostas create lush foliage and thrive in the cooler conditions. Foxtail ferns and asparagus ferns add texture and movement, becoming fuller and more dramatic with each growing season.

During the winter, we move these plants to a protected area and bring them back out in the spring. Reusing established plants not only saves money, but also creates larger and more impressive displays over time.

🌸 One of my current favorites is Mexican Heather. It is the annual I can’t quite give up.

Its delicate flowers give it a soft, airy appearance, but do not let that fool you. This plant handles Georgia heat remarkably well and blooms steadily throughout the season.

Sometimes the best garden strategy is to invest in plants that grow with you year after year.

🌿 Transplanting Hostas: Gardening as Living Art 🌿

Gardening is living art.

What thrives one year may struggle the next. Sometimes a plant simply needs a better location to reach its full potential.

That was the case with these hostas.

One group received too much sun. Another just never seemed to establish and grow the way we had hoped. Rather than giving up on them, we decided to move them to the shady side of the workshop, where conditions should be much more to their liking.

With the right environment, a small planting can eventually grow into a lush, beautiful patch.

Plants have a way of telling you when they are happy:

🌱 Larger leaves
🌱 Steady spreading year after year

We are looking forward to watching this little hosta garden settle in and expand over time.

🌿 Two New Showstoppers Added to Our Wooded Oasis 🌿

Today we added two special plants that will enhance the natural beauty of our property for years to come.

🌳 Little Gem Magnolia
The magnolia is one of the most iconic trees of the South. I have spent a long time deciding which variety to plant and searching for the right price.

To me, magnolias symbolize wisdom, strength, and quiet resilience—a tree that seems to have stood through generations and witnessed it all.

We chose the Little Gem Magnolia because it offers the classic Southern magnolia look in a more compact size, making it a perfect fit for this space. It is positioned so it can be enjoyed from the workshop window as it grows and matures.

🌸 Pink Camellia
Camellias are a newer discovery for us after moving from a colder climate. We have come to appreciate their glossy evergreen leaves and beautiful blooms during times of year when many other plants are dormant.

This pink-flowering camellia will eventually become a stunning focal point and add a soft burst of color to our wooded landscape.

There is something satisfying about planting trees and shrubs that will continue to grow in beauty long after the work is done.

🌲 Fresh Pine Straw = Instant Curb Appeal 🌲

One of my favorite parts of property ownership is stepping back after a project is complete and seeing how much cleaner and more inviting everything looks.

The pollen has finally settled, and we were able to put down fresh pine straw just in time for Memorial Day. The difference is always worth the effort.

💡 Money-Saving Tip:
Pine straw prices have increased quite a bit this year. Since our usual suppliers were significantly more expensive, we checked Facebook Marketplace and found pricing much closer to what we paid last year.

Sometimes the best deals are from local small businesses and individuals.

🌿 Memorial Day Refresh at Our Wooded Oasis 🌿

We’ve been getting the property ready for Memorial Day weekend.

First, we pulled back the old pine straw from the edges and redistributed it to thinner areas. Then we topped everything off with fresh pine straw for a clean, polished look.

One thing we noticed this year: pine straw prices have definitely gone up.

💡 Shopping Tip: Check Facebook Marketplace before buying. We found better prices there than at many traditional retailers.

It takes a little extra effort, but the result is a more welcoming entrance and a better first impression for our guests.
