This was taken at 6:30pm, more than two hours from sunset.

I stepped into the yard for a moment to make sure the dogs stayed focused on going potty. Breathing outside air for less than a minute triggered my asthma and made my throat feel scorched. The smell is atrocious. Acrid and chemical. Even without looking it up, I know that the wildfires aren't just consuming natural spaces.

In some places, the Air Quality Rating is over 550 right now. Literally off the charts, many of which top out at 500. Where I live, we broke 300, falling in the "hazardous" range. This means that breathing in these pollutants can quickly trigger severe health emergencies like uncontrollable coughing, airway inflammation, asthma attacks, strokes, and heart attacks. It can cause long-term respiratory or cardiovascular damage.

Stay indoors. Keep potty breaks short. Make use of puzzle toys, recall games, or whatever else you and your pups like to do to burn off energy without going outside.

Listen, when your little sister has at least 30 pounds on you and likes to go bounding overhead at 25+ mph, sometimes you gotta let her know you mean business.

Sloughis are built to pursue game with endurance and agility over punishing, often rocky, terrain. These nimble leaps are second nature for Fig. Because her exuberance often exceeds her awareness of personal space, she has a habit of simply jumping over whatever ends up in her path.

Haven, on the other hand, does not appreciate being treated like piece of equipment in Fig's personal obstacle course. She's always been a very socially savvy dog, but she frequently doesn't stand up for herself, even when she should.

Here, she's giving Fig a very appropriate, proportionate correction for popping her bubble. She bared her teeth and snapped, but she didn't make contact. Fig got the message and the game continued, a little more respectfully.

But only for a bit... It's hotter than hell out here right now.

Stay cool, y'all!
