Someone I know is on a Medicare Advantage plan and recently traveled to Jamaica for vacation. While there, she suffered a serious fall and broke her hip. She is currently hospitalized in Jamaica and unable to fly home on a regular commercial flight because she can't sit upright — she would need a medical evacuation (Medi-vac) flight on a stretcher, which is extremely expensive and of course not covered by her Medicare Advantage plan.
To make matters worse, the hospital is requiring payment before discharging her, but she doesn’t have the funds to pay the out-of-pocket medical bills or the cost of the Medi-vac transport.
She is essentially stuck, both physically and financially, and in urgent need of help.
Does anyone have experience with emergency medical evacuations, international patient advocacy, or know of any organizations or resources that might assist in cases like this?
