Basilio Inn Restaurant
Homegrown Ingredients: Basilio Inn grows its own herbs, vegetables, and grapes right on the premises. The restaurant even makes its own red wine vinegar from these grapes—a practice extremely rare on Staten Island and in most Italian restaurants.
Homemade Pasta and Desserts: Basilio prepares its own pasta and desserts from scratch. While a few other local venues may make fresh pasta, it’s still uncommon for the entire menu to be homemade, especially alongside fresh-grown produce.
Historic Tradition: Established in 1921, Basilio Inn is Staten Island’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and is housed in a 19th-century carriage house. Its tradition of closing for a winter break—a legacy continued for the past 105 years—sets it apart in terms of historical continuity. Most area restaurants operate year-round, and very few can claim such a long heritage.
Authentic, Family-Owned Experience: Basilio’s rustic, “no frills” decor, family involvement and seasonally updated recipes foster a warm, authentic Italian dining experience reminiscent of Old World trattorias. Most other Italian venues focus more on imported ingredients and contemporary decor.
Special Atmosphere: The restaurant maintains a bocce court and traditions rooted in the original Italian immigrant experience. This sense of place and community is difficult to find elsewhere, even in high-end local Italian spots.
This is what John said differentiated Basilio Inn from other restaurants on Staten Island and I replied that other guests may have different views on the restaurant. He smiled and said in his philosophical tone, perhaps aided by the red wine he was nursing, That's what makes this place unique!

Wonder why it happens in schools...
I want to share something a guest told me. He was in a methodist church in a southern state and read a sign :
Adultery is a sin. You can't have Kate and Edith too.
