At CLC, project-based learning is at the heart of what we do. Our students learn by asking questions, solving real-world problems, and applying their knowledge in meaningful ways.
This year, Deb's ELA class embodied that approach through an inspiring interdisciplinary project that connected literature, environmental stewardship, research, persuasive writing, and hands-on action.
Deb's ELA students brought literature to life through hands-on environmental projects inspired by the novel The First Rule of Climate Club by Carrie Firestone. Throughout the year, students explored themes of responsibility, problem-solving, and caring for the world around them—then turned those lessons into action.
After reading The First Rule of Climate Club, students researched climate-friendly planting options, determined project costs, and wrote persuasive grant letters to Brian, our CEO. Their thoughtful and convincing writing earned each class a $250 grant to make their ideas a reality.
With those funds, students worked collaboratively to design and improve our outdoor spaces. One class planted flowers, mulched around the school sign, and planted a special apple tree they named Lucy May, in honor of Lucy from our novel—the character whose mysterious illness was eventually diagnosed as a tick-borne disease. Since the tree was planted in May, students felt “Lucy May” was the perfect tribute.
Another class worked hard clearing weeds, installing a solar-powered water fountain, planting flowers, scrubbing the bench, and adding a bamboo wind chime to our Zen Garden to create a welcoming, environmentally conscious space.
Deb is incredibly proud of the academic growth our students demonstrated this year through reading, research, persuasive writing, and collaboration. Even more importantly, I am proud of the way they used what they learned to think critically about how we can care for and protect our planet. Their creativity, dedication, and teamwork made these projects possible, and their impact will continue to grow for years to come.
