HDAP Sunday School: HBCU Art Collections, Figures, Facts & Findings
Did you know that the art collection of
Morgan State University is located in the James E. Lewis Museum of Art? One of the featured artists is William H Johnson. Johnson, born in South Carolina in 1901, was known for his hundreds of works, but it wasn’t until recently that Johnson’s artwork began to receive its due attention.
JELMA has one of Johnson’s still life oil paintings on display, where Johnson’s use of bright colors helps define his bold artistic style. His artwork showcases African American life and culture, inspired by his upbringing in South Carolina, and his life in New York, where Johnson moved when he was seventeen years old. He eventually saved enough money to pay for an art education and attended National Academy of Design.
Wanna learn more about the career William H. Johnson and see his artwork on display? Be sure to checkout “Fighters for Freedom”, a traveling exhibition that stops by the
Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), from March 2024 - Sept 2024. Hope to see you there!!!

It’s almost tax season! The IRS is cautioning taxpayers to carefully pay attention to “exaggerated art donation deductions” aimed at high-income taxpayers.
The scheme involves bogus promoters who could persuade high income taxpayers to purchase art, wait to donate the art, and then take an inaccurate deduction for the art that was donated.
According to an article published by Thomson Reuters there are a number of factors that can lead to exaggerated art donation deductions. Purchasing multiple pieces of work by the same artists can be a red flag, or promoters encouraging certain appraisers for the buyer to use can be a red flag.
The IRS advises taxpayers to properly claim an art donation and offers more information on the IRS Art Appraisal Services.
Looking to avoid higher than normal art donation deductions? Start with an accurate appraisal!
