I recently connected with Amber Harris, the co-founder of Restorative Justice Movement, Restorative Justice Movement - St. Louis.

Two phone calls and a meeting later Amber asked me, a stranger practically, to be the mistress of ceremonies for the nonprofit’s Pain To Power Disaster Relief Concert.

I obliged in faith.

I’m humbled to say I helped honor community members who have consistently helped North City since the EF3 tornado on May 16, 2025.

Amber told me she wanted to convey one message: we are the disaster’s relief.

So last night, we presented healing hero awards to individuals like Larry Gray and Prop-Man Johnson Sr.. Awards also went to organizations like LOVEtheLOU.

Daycare workers and people providing fresh produce in North city, a food desert, were also awarded.

The performance by AJ McQueen echoed the same message of hope and relief.

Perhaps my favorite part about all of this is that the work continues and these people were never doing it for an applause, yet last night every chair was filled and they got their flowers.

For the work that is done when no one is watching, thank you!

The harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few.
