One of the greatest surprises about this home wasn’t the design.

It was discovering just how many people it would hold.

Between all of our summer travels, it’s easy to forget that since February, our home has quietly become a place of rest for others. Families have come through these doors carrying excitement, uncertainty, grief, healing, and hope.

And every stay has reminded us why thoughtful design matters.

Because accessibility isn’t just about wheelchairs or aging well.

It’s about making sure everyone feels welcome.

This home was intentionally designed so more people could fully participate in everyday life.

✨ A zero-step entrance for grandparents, strollers, wheelchairs, and tired little feet.
✨ Wide doorways and hallways that make moving through the home easier for everyone.
✨ Main-floor living with accessible bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry, and kitchen.
✨ An intergenerational kitchen where little helpers, grandparents, wheelchair users, and guests naturally gather.
✨ A simple backyard ramp (dreamed up by our 6-year-old and built with his uncle) so play didn’t have to stop at the patio.
✨ Spaces to rest, laugh, play, gather around the table, and simply be together.

Ironically, this home almost wasn’t our forever home.

After years of unexpected setbacks—our dream home facing one challenge after another—we found ourselves wondering if it was time to walk away.

But little by little, we repaired more than the house.

Today, this home has become exactly what we hoped it would be—not because it’s perfect, but because it has become a place where memories are made, burdens are shared, and joy is freely given.

And maybe that’s what universal design is really about.

Removing barriers so people can focus on what matters most: being together.

As we begin searching for our next home—one we hope will become an accessible vacation rental—we’re carrying this same mission with us.

Because everyone deserves a place where they can arrive, settle in, and simply belong.
