Good Thursday morning supporters and volunteers! We had the honor to sit-down and talk to Sara Ruiz for a community interview! The conversation is pasted below!

I had the honor to sit down with Sara Ruiz, Executive Director of Ashrei Foundation, and talk about a myriad of important community topics, but what I want to focus on today is the different ways to achieve justice. The Outreach Program is deeply connected to Sara and her work with the Ashrei Foundation because they seek to alleviate the same problems surrounding official identification in Missouri “in the pursuit of justice”. One form of justice we discussed is helping people with the obstacles in front of them because “individuals know what is best for them,” but sometimes they do not know the best way to overcome the hurdles. We agreed that we offer a crucial service for those who feel stuck in a spiral. A step further toward justice for Sara is recognizing that “these obstacles are not created by accident” and acting on that in our community. When one is invested in their community, they see the problem from both approaches and pursue justice the best they can with their unique abilities.

We also talked much about how passionate people in the community can see themselves helping others and playing their roles the best, they can. One critical aspect of being a volunteer is being “fluid enough in our work” to know how to talk to each guest and to make them feel heard. Volunteers are helping the guest’s life for the better, but there are instances when the person you are assisting impacts you in a meaningful way as well. Sara and I agreed that we must always be open to reflecting on our experiences to help us grow and be the best person and volunteers to fight the issues in our communities. The problems are enormous compared to us, but “one can carve out what you can give” and make it much more manageable.

I want to thank Sara Ruiz for sitting down with me and having a wonderful conversation!
