Happy last day of school to all who celebrate!
🥳🌈💕

For the FIRST TIME in my career, I won’t have a traditional summer break! I’m open at the office all summer, seeing private clients and providing speech therapy during summer programming for a local school.

I think it’ll be nice to stay in the groove for the summer!

What are your summer plans?

I’ve worked with medically complex kids and kids with severe-profound disabilities for my whole career and here’s what I would tell my best friend if they had a child diagnosed with a severe disability 🤍

This month I’m running a 5k to raise awareness for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) 💛🤍💙

Follow along for more facts about this condition and why SLPs should know about it!!

(Also thoughts and prayers for my legs bc the shins are splinting at the moment 😭)

Bright Light Language is making a huge switch! ✨ Income based sliding scale pay is now available and I wanted to explain some of my reasons behind this choice.

1️⃣ I want quality therapy to be more accessible to more people. It’s not fair that cost prohibits people from receiving the care they need and as a solo-practitioner I have the freedom to lower costs in the interest of giving more people access 🤍

2️⃣ Being at the mercy of insurance companies doesn’t help me and it doesn’t help you. Denials, code changes, waiting for payment, waiting for paperwork to go through… all of this takes away from spending time on actual therapy.

3️⃣ Insurance doesn’t cover reading support most of the time BUT literacy is a LIFE-CHANGING skill. For people with dyslexia, intensive support is often needed. The cost of multiple weekly sessions can be astronomical. I want to be able to offer this service in a more affordable way!

I know this isn’t a perfect solution, and as a new business owner I am constantly learning. But I hope this can help some families! For all the details, visit my website, www.brightlightlanguage.com 💛

This is a core board for a little one who is new to AAC! A binder like this is affordable, durable, and customizable! I always want to make sure AAC is being used for more than just wants and needs so for beginners I love to model social words and descriptions/comments too!

Yes/no questions are not the best place to start for early communicators (it’s a much more abstract concept than most people realize!) but they get used often at school and out & about! Plus, “no” is important to have for teaching and promoting self-advocacy in beginning communicators!

There’s plenty of room in the binder for actions, items, and other category-specific icons too 💛

What would you add?

🔥 Hot takes incoming! 🔥

🔥 AAC does not have to be high tech to be robust!! For some kids, an iPad or dedicated device just becomes a really expensive paperweight (or worse, projectile). Mid-low tech methods, especially for early communicators, are often overlooked!

🔥 Direct teaching is the missing puzzle piece for a lot of kids. If they aren’t picking up a skill from play/child-led therapy, sometimes it takes getting down to brass tacks and teaching it directly. A little bit of rote learning is not going to hurt anyone and can make a world of difference!

🔥 Kids cannot summarize, make predictions and inferences, understand humor or figurative language if they don’t have enough content knowledge as a foundation. Sometimes low-exposure to world knowledge can masquerade as a language disorder.

🔥 I see the motor planning benefits, I do. But for pre-literate children LAMP is basically impossible to navigate. Their symbols are opaque and confusing and since the vocabulary isn’t set up semantically it’s really hard for teachers and parents to follow, potentially leading to less follow-through in the classroom and at home.

🔥 What are your SLP hot takes?? 🔥

It’s been a while since I introduced myself! This is what I do out in the real world! Aside from being a clinician and business owner, I’m also a wife, dog mom, enneagram 9 (wing 8, iykyk), Virgo, older sister, aunt, and reality TV fan 🤩

Drop a comment to say hi! 👋🏻
