Our Executive Director Katerina Canyon said it plainly in the STL Post-Dispatch: closing nearly a third of St. Louis’s schools isn’t a facilities decision. It’s a test of our public priorities.

District leaders are facing real budget pressure; nobody’s pretending otherwise. But austerity for kids isn’t a law of nature. It’s a choice. And before we accept mass closures, the public deserves a real accounting: how did state funding choices, charter expansion, corporate tax abatements, and years of disinvestment get us here? What replaces the schools we close? And who gets protected: the students with disabilities, the families without cars, the kids who depend on magnet programs?

Swipe through, then read Katerina’s full letter.
