In the days before alarm clocks, there was a person called a 'knocker-upper' in most towns. The knocker-upper would make rounds at the crack of dawn, knocking and banging on doors and windows with a stick to wake people up for the day.

The invention of the pendulum clock in 1656 by Christian Huudgens reduced the deviation of accurate time from 15 minutes a day to about 15 seconds.
