Do you see the old cash register receipt on the chest of the bird? It fell out of a book I found at an antique store. When I was a little girl, I loved to play “Store”. I had a little adding machine that printed receipts, which made it feel like I was doing bizzz-NESS! I also always had a paper rolled up like a cigarette (70/80’s baby) that I kept in my hand. That is crazy to think about now, but it’s true. (Please tell me others did this too😬)

Finding bits to include in my work that spark a memory, a feeling, or a story is an essential ingredient in my creative process recipe.

Carolyn Lewis creates mixed media artwork that weaves together textiles, collage, and paint into richly layered compositions. Each piece begins in chaos and is built through 10–12 layers, resulting in work that feels both textured and deeply intentional.

Birds and nests are central to her imagery, symbolizing protection, care, and the idea of home as something we build and carry with us. These forms reflect cycles of nurturing, letting go, and remaining connected—ideas that resonate strongly with parents, caregivers, and anyone navigating change or personal growth.

Rooted in her own journey of healing and self-discovery, Lewis’s work invites viewers to feel seen and held. Her pieces offer a sense of connection and warmth, creating spaces that are both visually dynamic and emotionally grounding.
