Working with a student who had the following problem on a homework assignment:

The front side of a standard brick measures 2 1/4 inches by 8 inches. With a 1/4-inch mortar joint, the visible dimensions of each brick increases 2 1/2 inches by 8 1/4 inches. To estimate the number of bricks needed per square foot (144 square inches), you need to perform the following calculation:

144 + (2 1/2 x 8 1/4)

Determine this quantity rounded to the nearest whole number.

This was no. 1 of the student's assignment. Bottom line: Whether you attend a four-year college or a trade school, you will never avoid academic work. You will never avoid math - particularly algebra.

Free Game: There is no "new" math. Two plus two is and forever will be four. However, there are many ways to teach it. You can add two apples and two oranges, two brothers and two sisters, two sticks and two rocks, etc. The way you learned it (parents) may have been right for you, but it's not the only right way. Teachers are always trying new things to reach students. Learning is a lifelong endeavor. To help your student, you must be willing to learn as you teach. Don't fight the school because you may not understand. Do what you would tell your student to do. Read the instructions, work through the examples, try the problems, and ask questions. And if this ends up being overwhelming for you, call us. 😁
