I use the word remediation when discussing specific learning disabilities because it is possible. Far too often parents are told by people in authority that the child will always underperform. The child will always be highly impacted by these differences. Data doesn't back that up. When children are taught using evidence based instruction, by a teacher trained in that instruction to fidelity of the instruction, remediation is possible and does happen. I've seen it in my own home and in my advocacy. Do not stop fighting for your child. They can reach their potential with the right programming and teacher training.

Nobody is suggesting that students with disabilities should be expected to perform identically to their nondisabled peers.

But Congress warned against a different danger: confusing disability with inability.

Most students receiving special education services do not have intellectual disabilities. Many have disabilities—including dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities—for which reading outcomes can be substantially improved through effective, evidence-based instruction.
