This , we honor Dr. Nathaniel Carter, a 1968 alumnus whose lifetime of service has shaped both the College and the Jackson, TN community.

Dr. Carter earned his Master’s in Divinity from Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), an M.A. in Sociology from Fisk University, and a PhD in Sociology from LaSalle University. In 1974, he returned to Lane as a faculty member, teaching sociology, psychology, and religion courses, and later served as Associate Professor of Religion, nurturing students’ spiritual and intellectual growth.

As part of the Department of Religion, he guided students preparing for careers in ministry, education, and community leadership, exemplifying Lane’s mission to develop the “whole student.” Beyond the classroom, Dr. Carter pastored several CME Church congregations, including Hurts Chapel in Jackson, TN, where he served for 41 years, mentoring countless individuals and extending Lane’s legacy of faith-based scholarship and community engagement.
