Mrs. Kayla Welch
š Iām telling you, this is hands down the easiest (and most enjoyable) way to get your students hooked on books!
The concept is called āFirst Chapter Friday,ā but donāt let that stop you from doing it any day that fits in your schedule.
šTodayās Tip:
Wrap the book to create some anticipation!
šHow FCF Works:
1ļøā£Pick a book (I have a bunch of suggestions in my reels, check them out.)
2ļøā£Grab a Mrs. Kayla Welch First Chapter Friday worksheet, bookmarks, or the full workbook!
(All worksheet sets come with a Friday and a Frenzy version; the original graphic organizer, the bookmarks, and the full workbook come with lotto tickets⦠workbook add-ons do not because theyāre meant to accompany the workbook.)
3ļøā£Read the first chapter.
Thatās seriously it. Leave them on a cliffhanger and theyāre going to want to finish reading the book.
āļøStart it this week, you wonāt regret it. Let me know how it goes!

I'm just getting started building my page, and my weekly book recommendations havenāt quite taken off here yet.
BUT they are something I share consistently every week⦠just over on Instagram and TikTok for now š
Once this page grows a bit more, Iād love to start posting those weekly recs here too. In the meantime, if you donāt want to miss them, come hang out with me on IG or TT (both .welch)!
Thatās where all the weekly book ideas are living right now š

šI just need to freak out over here.š
Did you know I post weekly First Chapter Friday book recommendations on both Instagram and TikTok? (both .welch)
A few times I have had the author of the weekās book interact with my video, and itās exciting every. single. time!
This weekās book was āOne Crazy Summerā (which, btw is such a good book.. you NEED to read it this month for FCF!)
š¤ÆRita Williams Garcia 1ļøā£ liked, 2ļøā£ commented multiple times, and 3ļøā£ reposted the video. š²
My husband and I donāt do anything for Valentineās Day (no gifts, no dates because I donāt really care about presents and going anywhere would be out of control on Valentineās Day) BUT, I feel like I received a gift today. šš
Anyyyyyway, just wanted to say that apparently Iām cool or whatever. Who knew? (Just kidding, Iām really not. My favorite activities are sleeping, running, and sewing. Itās hard to be cool with those hobbies.)
But for real, you should go follow on IG or TT for weekly book recommendations! There are already quite a few to get you started. ā¤ļø
Friday's First Line Friday was fromā¦
āØKrampus and the Thief of ChristmasāØ
This book is PERFECT for those days youāre short on time ā the first chapter is quick and leaves kids wanting more.
š Poll time: What grade would YOU read BOOK with? (3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th?)
šThen comment below ā what book are you hoping I read in the new year? I'm getting my list together and would LOVE some suggestions!
(Side note - posting on Facebook is so much harder than posting on TikTok or IG.. they should really work on that. š)
āØFirst Line Friday!āØ
I have been doing this series on IG since August, but have never posted any of the videos on here. We'll see how this goes.
Hereās how it works: Iāll read the opening line of a book and YOU try to guess which book itās from š¤
I want to see all your guesses - no matter if someone has already said your guess or not! āŗļø
šThis is not only my last Christmas First Line Friday of the year, but itās also my last First Line Friday of the year in general.
Do you think you know the book or the character I am referring to? Drop your guesses in the comments ā¬ļø and come back tomorrow for the reveal + why itās a must-have for your classroom lineup!
š End-of-Year Engagement Idea: No Prep, All Fun! š
Looking for a zero-prep way to keep your students thinking, laughing, and actually participating these last few weeks? Try this interactive "Would You Rather" Debate Activity:
Write a āWould You Ratherā question on the board. Silly or seriousāyour choice! One of my most divisive WYR question on IG recently was: Would you rather have fingers made of crayons or toes made of jelly beans?
Then, do a Think-Pair-Share:
1ļøā£Give students time to think silently.
2ļøā£Have them share with a partner.
3ļøā£Split the room: Students who choose fingers made of crayons go left. Students who choose toes made of jelly beans go right. Anyone unsure stands in the middle.
Now itās debate time! Lay down the ground rules: be kind, take turns, and listen respectfully. You are the discussion leader. Call on students, alternating sides, to share their reasoning. Allow students to switch sides if they are swayed by the opposition.
š”Bonus: Challenge each side to convince the undecided students in the middle to join them. Students love trying to sway their classmatesāand sometimes even switch sides themselves!
This quick activity gets students moving, thinking critically, and engaging with each otherāwith no copies or prep required. š
Ideas for mini debate topics:
ā”ļøIs cereal a soup?
ā”ļøIs a hotdog a sandwich?
ā”ļøWould you rather have a fast forward button or a rewind button for your life?
ā”ļøWould you rather lose all your front teeth permanently or never be able to chew solid foods again?
⨠Why I Started Creating Resources āØ
I was a 5th grade teacher who loved finding creative ways to make life easier for me and my team. When our students struggled to remember their states and capitals, I made digital flashcards. When they needed more structure at the start of the day, I created morning welcomes.
What started as a way to support my own classroom turned into something biggerāI realized I loved creating resources and had a real passion for graphic design. Now I help other busy teachers save time and feel confident with engaging, ready-to-use materials. š
