Pharmaceutical companies don't advertise their highest-margin drugs to inform you. They advertise them because the gap between manufacturing cost and price charged is large enough that every additional prescription an ad generates returns far more than the ad cost. You're not being educated — you're being recruited into a demand pool. The copay card makes the drug feel affordable while leaving the list price untouched. And the $9 billion spent on all of this in 2025 isn't a marketing expense. It's a price maintenance mechanism, legal, tax-deductible, and running largely unchallenged since 1997.

AbbVie cut workers, cut research by 29%, gave the CEO a 75% raise, spent billions on advertising, and charged patients prices the innovation argument says exist to fund research the company was simultaneously defunding. When those are the facts, the innovation argument isn't a business case. It's a cover story — and the filings that prove it are public record sitting in plain sight.

Every senator who asks why Americans pay more than anyone else in the world gets the same answer from the pharmaceutical industry: innovation. High prices fund the science. In 2025, they made $177 billion in profit, returned $97 billion to shareholders, and spent $5.9 billion less on research than the year before. The innovation argument requires the money to flow toward research. The financial filings show it went to shareholders, executives, and advertisers instead. That's not an allegation — it's in the filings.
