I think I've always been an entrepreneur at heart. Before I sold a single house, I owned a dealership in Ozark called Courtesy Auto Sales, where we sold preowned cars, camper trailers, and RVs. Seventeen years of it, starting back in 1991.

I still have a coffee mug from those days. It says "Establishing Lifetime Friends" right on it.

My real estate business runs on the same motto today, just with one word changed: Building Lifetime Friendships. And it's not a slogan I picked because it sounded nice. It's just what kept happening to me, in two different businesses, decades apart. You tell people the truth even when it costs you the sale, you show up when it's inconvenient, and somewhere along the way they stop being customers. They become people who wave at you at the grocery store fifteen years later.

That's the only business model I've ever actually known how to run.
