Have you ever received a safety recall notice in the mail or by email. When an OEM part has a safety recall manufacturer will send these out to notify you something needs to be done that could possibly be a safety hazard. If you haven't got it done when you check in for service work a lot of the times, they perform these while it's in for routine work. Regardless OEM has a process to inform you when a part could have failures that put you at risk. It's not often but it does happen.
So, let's say you had your car repaired at a Collision facility and they used CAPA certified parts your insurance company told you was just as good as OEM. What does that process look like when one has failed or is no longer certified?
Most collision shops and insurance companies don't even know what the process is. Why is that you ask? To be honest it's quite easy to miss. You used to have to sign up on CAPA website for monthly decertify reports which no one ever tells you about. Those would come by email, it will tell you year, manufacturer type, lot or batch number and what A/M part company it was. Rarely does it specify why it's been decertified. The only way I could know if it's a part, I have used is to pull the invoice from that car and check lot or batch number.
Let's ask a real question... Even if I get these reports what's the odds of me digging through every file checking to make sure the lot numbers matched to get your part swapped out. I'm going to tell you 100% that isn't happening. It's possible you could be riding around with a safety component ready to fail and you have no idea.
When choosing a collision repair facility ask them what type of parts they use. Are they going to put inferior parts on your car and try to sell them as the same quality? Or would they fight for you as a consumer to put OEM back on your car and make you whole again.
*As a special note... When a popular Collision podcast broadcasted how to get these decertified reports publicly Capa had it removed and no longer sends them by email...*

Another big MSO (multi shop organization) eats another MSO.
Most people at a glance see these big MSO's and think they are all over the place they must do a really good job. MSO's are nothing more than investment firms that pour money into the industry to gooble up as many shops as they can. They build, invest and buy up in hopes of selling later down the road.
Well they must be great at what they do, otherwise they wouldn't be able to set up quickly and add so many shops. The truth is they sign major deals with Insurance Companies so they are constantly flooded with contracted work. Those contracts are called DRP's. There is not a single DRP contract out there that benefits a body shop completely. We have conceded on something to earn that contract. Maybe its only raising our rates at certain times, or not charging storage in a total loss claim. We have agreed to something in order to make that deal beneficial to both parties.
They help us by faster claim processing and recommending claims to the shop and we get more work. Currently we have only 2 DRP's at our shop. I could have quite a bit more if I wanted, but most DRP's cost you the customer. These shops help sell cheap repairs to your car and don't keep you informed of what they are doing. They tell you cheap imitation parts are just as good as OEM. They repair structures of cars that should be replaced. They take shortcuts that quite frankly could get you killed in the event of a second impact. Insurance companies steer work into those shops by making these kinds of threats. "We don't have an agreement with them so it may cost you money out of pocket if we don't agree with the repair." They want you to take it to that DRP because if they decline the repair good chance the shop will just do what they said and not even notify you.
If your insurance company has ever pressured you into a shop and you think something is off the repair, bring it by our shop. I will be happy to take a look at it without cost to you. We have served Robertson County for over 13 years and we want to continue to serve you. If we can help in anyway don't hesitate to reach out and let us know.
