Birth culture is changed one mother, one birth, one family at a time. Sometimes it can feel quite hard when you choose to birth in a way that feels outside of the cultural norm. Maybe you don’t have friends or family who have ever chosen to birth in a similar way that you would like to. Maybe your parents or in-laws are not supportive or are fearful. Maybe your community outright says you are brave, but not in a positive way.
Do your research, find a supportive provider, find a like-minded community, and most of all trust your intuition. No one knows your body or your baby better than you do.
As a midwife myself I have taken a considerable amount of time to slow down and envision who I want to allow into my sacred birth space. I’ve prayerfully considered who will surround me with peace, love, knowledge, skill, and trust in birth. Choosing who enters your birth space is one of the most impactful decisions you can make.
I’ve also been intentional about the time it takes to mentally prepare for my own birth. I have walked into hundreds of birth spaces to support women, and yet that does not mean I am prepared for my own birth journey. If I hope to bring my baby into the world surrounded by love and peace, then I myself must do the work of mental preparation for the intensity of labor.
