Over 150 educators and community members gathered for the Springfield Education Association’s end of the year celebration.

The Springfield Education Association had the pleasure of awarding our Joan Cormack and Meline Kasparian Scholarships to a set of very deserving awardees.

In addition, we shared some stories of success from this school year.

Our political education committee has been regularly sending members to school committee and interacting with local and state officials.

Our immigration committee continues to work tirelessly to build a support network across our schools.

Members of our organizing committee have been working alongside low-incidence educators to secure grant funding to support the work they do in their classrooms.

Pre-K educators throughout the district have coordinated their efforts to defend the victories in our contract.

Members organized a conference to highlight the work we’ve done to advance racial equity.

And so much more.

Through our collective action this year we’ve been able to demonstrate our capacity to work on multiple fronts, with no signs of slowing down. The work continues to build a Springfield and a society which prioritizes the schools that our students deserve.

The Department of Secondary and Elementary Education (DESE or BESE) has changed MTEL Licensure requirements!

The MTA is having a member meeting on May 27th at 6pm over zoom to discuss the MTEL Licensure changes that are being implemented.

There will be Spanish interpretation available.

The SEA Annual Gathering is on Thursday, May 28th, 4 p.m. at The Elks Lodge.

This will be an opportunity to reflect on what we’ve accomplished this year as a union, hear from various organizing projects in SEA, enjoy food and relax with co-workers!

Yesterday, on May Day, Springfield Educators marched down the streets of Holyoke with a collation of labor unions and political activists to celebrate the legacy of the day and to protest the current political and economic system that is captive to a billionaire class and which produces inequality for our students and our communities.

Our students are facing housing insecurity due to a system which prioritizes keeping wages low and rents high.

They face food insecurity, with some relying on the meals provided to them at school for adequate nutrition.

Our communities are being terrorized and our student’s families are being ripped apart by agents empowered by a government which openly wishes to do them harm.

Our children can’t be the best students they can be in the classroom when the world outside it is stacked against them.

Our community deserves dignity, safety, and stability. This is why we march. That is why we, the educators of Springfield, will continue to act. For our students, our families, and our community.

We call on members of the school committee to listen to educator feedback and change the calendar.

On Thursday 4/2 the SEA released a Survey about the recently released 2026-2027 School Year Calendar after one-on-one conversations between staff and union reps had indicated this may be a widely and deeply felt issue.

Since then over 1,200 staff have taken the survey with 83% indicating dissatisfaction with the calendar with 85% of dissatisfied respondents indicating that they’d prefer less time off over Winter Break and more time off in Summer.

Overall, the survey reveals that staff are concerned about the length of Summer Break, it’s proximity to Summer School, how an extended Winter Break may disrupt routines of our students, and how an extended Winter break impacts the livelihood of our peers with hourly wages.

The school calendar is on the agenda for tomorrow’s (4/9) School Committee Meeting.
