New York just passed a significant pension reform: teachers can now retire five years earlier than the current system allows.

This matters because teaching is physically and emotionally demanding work. The ability to step away at a reasonable age — rather than grinding toward 65 or 67 — acknowledges what we know about burnout and sustainability in the profession. It's also a concrete recognition that teaching requires a different calculus than many other careers.

The reform signals something important: that policymakers are beginning to understand teacher retention and well-being as interconnected. When educators can see a viable exit that doesn't require decades of deferred living, it changes the entire equation of whether this profession feels sustainable.
