Today is gear prep day. I have a big 2 day shoot in Jeff city so it’s time to charge everything and pack the bags with everything I’ll need. Very blessed to be my own boss and travel for work sometimes.

One of the most common mistakes in nonprofit video: filming a person with a disability and making their disability the whole story. People are not their diagnosis. Great documentary work asks — what does this person want the world to understand? Then gets out of the way and lets them say it.

The question every nonprofit leader should ask before hiring a filmmaker: "Do you see our community as the expert, or as the subject?" There's a real difference. One approach creates a film about people. The other creates a film WITH people. Ask for examples of both. The answer tells you everything.
