Happy Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel! 🤎👑

On this most blessed Feast Day, we are honored to officially announce a truly historic milestone for our parish and our community.

Last month in Rome, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Basilica of Santa Maria in Traspontina officially entered into a Gemellaggio (Sister Parish relationship) during a beautiful ceremony celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.

This is a historic first—the first time in history that a parish in the United States has entered into a Gemellaggio with a Roman basilica. This sacred bond forever unites our two Marian communities through our shared devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, our Catholic faith, and our rich Italian heritage.

This historic initiative was conceived, organized, and coordinated by the Springfield Sons & Daughters of Italy, St. Padre Pio Lodge #3013, whose commitment to preserving our Italian heritage and strengthening the bonds between Italy and the Italian-American community made this extraordinary moment possible. Their vision and dedication have created a lasting spiritual relationship that will benefit both communities for generations to come.

More than a ceremonial agreement, this Gemellaggio is a lasting commitment to prayer, friendship, pilgrimage, cultural exchange, and mutual support between Springfield and Rome. It is a relationship that will continue to grow and bear fruit for years to come.

On this Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we give thanks to the Blessed Mother for leading us to this extraordinary moment in the history of our parish. May she continue to guide and protect both of our communities as we walk together in faith.

VIVA LA MADONNA DEL CARMINE! E buona festa a tutti chiamati Carmela, Carmelo, e Carmine!

Every July 16, Italians around the world honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel, one of the most beloved Marian devotions in our tradition.
Her title traces back to Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where hermits lived in prayer during the Middle Ages. These early Carmelites dedicated themselves to the Virgin Mary, and in the 13th century she was said to have appeared to Saint Simon Stock, giving him the scapular as a sign of protection, mercy, and spiritual guidance.

Across Italy — especially in Sicily, Campania, Abruzzo, and Puglia — her feast day has long been celebrated with processions, votive offerings, music, and community gatherings. These traditions crossed the ocean with Italian immigrants, becoming pillars of identity in Italian‑American neighborhoods and parishes.

For generations, devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has offered comfort in hardship, unity in community life, and a powerful reminder of the faith carried from Italy to America.
