As our nation celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the earthly liberties we enjoy, we gather this Sunday morning to celebrate an even greater freedom. Long before 1776, a definitive declaration was made on a hill called Calvary. In this 4th of July message, we explore the profound truth of Galatians 5:1: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." Join us as we discover the five specific bondages Jesus broke to give us a life of true, lasting independence.
Freedom From What?
1. Freedom from the Penalty of Sin (Death)
The ultimate consequence of our brokenness has been paid in full. We no longer walk toward ex*****on; we walk toward eternal life.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” — Galatians 5:1
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
2. Freedom from the Power of Sin (Bo***ge)
Through Jesus, sin is no longer our master. We aren't just forgiven for our past; we are empowered to live differently in our present.
“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” — John 8:31-32
Hebrews 4:9-16 (Note: Hebrews 4:14-16 highlights Jesus as our High Priest who helps us overcome temptation in our time of need).
3. Freedom from the Curse of the Law
We are no longer trapped in a system of legalism where one mistake ruins everything. Christ fulfilled the law so we could live under grace.
“For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.’” — Galatians 3:10
James 2:8-11 & Romans 6:20-23
4. Freedom from Guilt and Condemnation
When Adam and Eve sinned, they hid in fear and shame. Because of Christ, we no longer have to hide from God in our guilt; we can approach Him with confidence.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” — Romans 8:1-2
Genesis 3:6-10 (The origin of shame) & Galatians 3:10-14 (Christ becoming a curse for us).
5. Freedom from the Fear of Death
Because Jesus conquered the grave, death is no longer a permanent dynamic or an unknown terror. It is simply a doorway into His presence.
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.’” — John 11:25
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms...” — John 14:1-2
Concluding Truths:
The Call to Stand Firm:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” — Galatians 5:1
The Purpose of Liberty:
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” — Galatians 5:13

When you look at your life, your faith, or the world around you... what do you actually see?
In this message, Pastor Mike dives into John 3:1-3, Matthew 13, and Matthew 23 to unpack a powerful truth: it is entirely possible to look right at the truth and completely miss it. From Nicodemus struggling to see the Kingdom of God, to the parables of Jesus, to His sharp warnings against religious hypocrisy, God is challenging us to check our spiritual vision.
