American Jujitsu
Did you know CrossFit was born inside a jujitsu gym?
In 2000, before CrossFit had affiliates, Games, or global recognition, Greg Glassman launched his experimental training method by renting space inside a Santa Cruz jujitsu school. CrossFit’s earliest reps were had in an environment rooted in the functional, practical mindset that defines jujitsu. Both disciplines were built to prepare people for the unknown and the unknowable.
And here’s where the story flips.
Two decades later, American Jujitsu was born inside a well‑established CrossFit gym — Capital City CrossFit, the Springfield area’s original CrossFit gym. Where CrossFit once grew up in a jujitsu gym, AJJ grew up in a CrossFit gym. The roles reversed, but the shared DNA stayed the same: grit, functional fitness, and real‑world readiness.
Today, that lineage lives inside every foot of our nearly 17,000‑square‑foot facility. AJJ and Capital City CrossFit continue the tradition of preparing people — physically, mentally, and socially — for the unknown and the unknowable.
