Verse: He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:8
Devotion: As you've probably figured out, the second mile is the mile our Lord Himself walked. He knows the road very well. It was love that took Him on the miracle mile to the cross.
Jesus journeyed that mandated first mile when He stepped out of heaven, into human flesh, and kept every detail of the law. But Jesus also went the second mile, motivated by His love for us. He who spoke the universe into existence, the One who formed and fashioned us with His own hands, said, "I love you, and I will walk with you." But we went our own way.
That's when Jesus said, "I will go the second mile." It took Him to the cross, where He bore the weight, not of a Roman soldier's backpack, but of our own sin.
Consider opportunities you have today to go the second mile. Doing so will brighten your road and lighten someone else's load.
Code Word: BLESSING
If it is great to get a blessing, it is much greater to be a blessing. Give by being a blessing to others, and you will receive the greater blessing.
Prayer: Lord, is it more blessed to give than to receive. Lead me to someone whose load I might lighten today. In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: "Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." Matthew 5:41
Devotion: The Romans had conquered most of the Mediterranean world. In first-century Palestine, a Roman citizen or soldier could - by law - compel a subject in one of the conquered lands to carry his load for him for one mile, but one mile only.
But Jesus told His followers, "Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two" (Matthew 5:41). Can you imagine the reaction of the listening crowd - people who were living under Roman occupation - when it fell upon their ears? Jesus was calling on His hearers to do what was required of them - times two!
What is it that separates some from others in athletics, in education, in business, in the arts, in any endeavor? It is their drive - their willingness - to do more than is expected or required. When we who name Jesus our Savior and Lord go that extra mile, that act separates us from the crowd, and we find ourselves shining Jesus' light by serving selflessly and with His love.
Code Word: EXCEED
Do you find satisfaction in just doing the minimum, that which is required of you? That is not enough. Decide now to exceed that, to do what is required of you and then some.
Prayer: Lord, give me the servant heart of a second-miler today. In Jesus' name, amen.
