Preparing for our last day at William Holland before heading into the mountains of North Carolina for some much needed rest. Diane and I are really looking forward to telling the club all about our experiences here. It is truly a magical place. No matter how well we "use our words" (as my instructor was always telling me to do) you will still be surprised and impressed when you spend time here. Thanks again for sending us on scholarship.

Day 4 — Report back to the home front.

We have emerged—briefly—from our respective camps.

At the appointed hour, all disciplines converged into a single hall for what can only be described as a summit of makers. Metalsmiths, clay workers, lapidaries, and beaders—each carrying the artifacts of their labor—assembled to present findings from the field.

The pieces on display defy imagination; quality undeniable; results… remarkable.

Silver, once raw and unassuming, now shaped into intricate forms by fire and patience. Stones, pulled from rough obscurity, revealed their hidden brilliance under steady hands. Clay, transformed from earth into structure and story. Beads—countless, deliberate—woven into patterns that speak their own language.

There was a moment—standing among them—where the scope of this place became clear. Each discipline working in isolation… yet all connected by the same quiet obsession to create and even colaborate.

Knowledge was exchanged. Techniques discussed. Inspiration… contagious.

Morale remains high.

Supplies still holding.

Fatigue… present, but ignored.

We return now to our stations, carrying new ideas gathered from the others. The work will continue into the night, as it has before.

To those back home: know that this expedition is yielding results. Not just in finished pieces—but in skill, perspective, and a deeper respect for the craft.

More to follow—if conditions allow.

And grateful to those who enabled us to be here.

Report from William Holland School of Lapidary Arts: Day… uncertain. We believe it to be Day 3.

Time has begun to slip its tether. The morning bell—if it can be called that—rings at 7, though it feels earlier, or perhaps later. We rise after a substantial breakfast, taken as if fortification is required for what lies ahead. It always is.

The work begins immediately.

There is no idle chatter now. Only the quiet, deliberate rhythm of hands at task—metal heated, shaped, coaxed into form. Silver flows like a controlled river, dangerous and mesmerizing. The air smells of flux and heat. Stone yields slowly under pressure, twisted wire forms—rock chips accumulating like the passing of hours we no longer measure.

We press on.

Light fades, but no one stops. The boundary between day and night has dissolved. Lamps hum to life, extending the expedition beyond natural limits. We continue as long as conditions allow.

Supplies remain stable—for now.

Power holds.

Silver remains.

Rock chips grow into trees.

Food… more delicious than ever.

Morale: strangely high.

There is an unspoken agreement among us: we will stay. We will continue. We will push deeper into this strange and consuming endeavor for as long as resources permit.

What happens when they run out is not discussed.

For now, we endure—and create.

Wish you were here today at the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts.

Cool, rainy “Cookie Day” — and yes, fresh-baked cookies showed up in the classroom at 2:30pm. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Projects are really starting to come together: Diane’s dialing things in over in the Micro Tree Lab, and Hunter’s over here pouring hot silver like it’s just another Tuesday.

This place is the real deal. If you’ve ever thought about coming, do it.
