******UPDATE*******

Access to the farm is now open!!!!

Subscription Customers!!!!! Tornado warnings graced the farm again this morning and as a result all access is currently closed off. I’ll update you all as soon as it’s safe to make your way out to the farm.

While we wait for the floodwaters to subside, “local news” asked me to fill in for a quick Sharknado Part 3 update which I happily said yes to in between switching out the cows. Enjoy!!

If you guessed the bright yellow spoon of butter, you are correct! Butter made from our cream tends to be more yellow because of beta-carotene, a natural pigment found in fresh grass and plants that cows eat. 🧈🌱

Here’s the breakdown:
• Grass-fed cows (especially in spring and summer) eat fresh pasture rich in beta-carotene. Cows don’t fully break down beta-carotene, so it passes into their milk fat and gives it a golden color.
• Raw milk hasn’t been homogenized or processed, so the natural pigments stay more intact and concentrated in the cream.
• Seasonal diet matters too: in summer, when cows eat fresh grass, butter is usually more yellow. In winter, when they’re fed hay or grain, butter tends to be paler.
• Fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K (especially vitamin A) are higher in raw, grass-fed milk, which also adds to the rich yellow tone.

So—yellow butter is usually a good sign that the cows were eating fresh, nutrient-rich forage. 🌼

How are you using your cream? We turned some into butter today and did a little comparison to store butter, can you tell which one came from cows on pasture?
