Not old, foundational.
These space plans are from my art boutique & an apartment. Drawn on scale graph paper about 10 years ago, working through layout, proportion, spatial flow, scale and workflow before anything was purchased. Cutting pieces out for types of furniture I liked, moving them around with my hands, and testing different layouts until it felt right, there was always tweeks after filling the space.

There’s something genuinely fulfilling about this process. I studied design in college and earned another in advertising, however it all connects, thinking in terms of a blank space, whether it is paper, canvas or a screen. Composition, balance, and even color, it’s not just about visuals, it’s about how something functions and how it makes you feel.

I still use both approaches today. Technology is an incredible tool, it saves time, allows to store and refine ideas, and makes revisions effortless. For example of virtual staging of empty spaces for real estate. I do spend hours virtual staging for my clients.

However, strong design doesn’t come from software. It comes from understanding scale, proportion, flow, and how people actually move, live, work and how they will feel. For me in graphic design, it started with pencil, eraser, paper, scale ruler, colored markers, colored pencils, rapidograph pens and building the foundation the hands-on way for design. If you did not like it, it most cases you started over from scratch and working through it until it was right.

Everything builds from the basics, the foundation as so does knowledge. One of senior professors use to say KISS, remember to keep it simple… to think, now I am that senior still running it through my brain. KISS
