Here's an uncomfortable truth most art galleries don’t want you know :
In fact the art collector is far more important to a gallery than the artist !!!
Yes, the artist creates the art work. But the collector is the one who actually pays the bills and keeps the gallery alive. Without someone willing to buy, the paintings in the gallery are just expensive decoration taking up wall space.
This is exactly why some galleries treat collectors like royalty and artists like replaceable suppliers. Very often they'll happily sit on your money for months, hide sales from you, and only tell you when you find out by chance about the sale or come to take your art work back.
It happens because in their eyes, the artist is expendable and easily replaceable. The collector isn’t !!! So, next time when you hear that this or that gallery defend this or that artist, it means that the gallery sells the art of the artist and use his production for their own survival and prosperity. What the gallery defend is their own interests and well-being only... And the satisfaction of their clients the art collectors of course. After all this comes the artist.
The power dynamic is obvious. The collector holds the real power.
That's why, it is very important, absolutely essential and the only thing that matters for an artist's career, who is your collector !!!
