This past December, Music Bridges Borders was able to donate two musical instruments to two deserving students, Amy Mendoza Schraidt, who received a trumpet, and Ximena Martinez Santiago, who received a trombone. Both girls are from Mexicali, Mexico, and are students in the Music Band of Secondary School #50, directed by Maestro Gerson Ramirez, as well as the Rio Nuevo Youth Symphonic Orchestra in Mexicali, Mexico. The girls were accompanied by their mothers. The instruments were presented by Elinor and Rick Reed, President and Vice President of Music Bridges Borders.
The presentation was made at the garden of the clinic of Dr. Cesar Fernando Torres Cardenas, Pulmonologist, and Dr. Alan Byron Vidal Heredia, Opthalmologist, at L 1999 Colonia Nueva in Mexicali. With a wonderful outdoor venue under two large shade trees, which also houses a relaxing coffee shop. We were thankful to the doctors, who are sponsors for MBB, for letting us use this attractive space, which also serves as a waiting area for the clinic. It is the first time any of us has seen what is a beautiful outdoor space with dual use as a nice place for patients and/or customers to sit and enjoy coffee and beverages, as well as for patients to wait for a doctor appointment.
Thank you to Laura Elena Gonzalez Negrete, President, and Xocitl Granados Segura, Vice President, from the Parents' Committee of the Secondary School #50 Music Band for their attendance and their help in coordinating the gathering. Much appreciation goes to Gerson Ramirez for also facilitating communication with MBB and Banda 50, and maintaining the liason with MBB.
We also thank Dr. Elsa Lorena Cardenas for her collaboration with MBB for following through on making sure the children will receive and enjoy their instruments. We also appreciate Ed and Judy May who donated the instruments to MBB, as well as Cyn Orozco at Clearwater Music in Spokane, for doing any necessary maintenance of the instruments.
It was a pleasure to have the presence of previous MBB students, David Garcia Gordillo, Keila Suhally Reyes Gallardo and Ariel Iñiguez Granados for their attendance and for sharing their experiences at our music camps in Sandpoint and in Spokane with the Spokane Youth Symphony.
