AI didn’t break this IT team. Management did.

A 400-person company tried to cut its IT team from five people to two after management saw a consultant deck about “AI-powered IT operations.”

They were “leaning into intelligent automation.” His role was being “right-sized for the AI-enabled enterprise.” Which is an impressive number of words for “someone got too confident after a PowerPoint.”

So in his exit interview, he laid out everything AI and the remaining team couldn’t realistically cover. The undocumented systems. The vendor weirdness. The one-off fixes. The context. The judgment calls. All the invisible work that only looks unnecessary when it’s being done well.

Then they asked him to consult. He said yes — for triple his usual rate.

AI should make your IT team stronger. Not give leadership an excuse to pretend they don’t need one.

Most tools only show you the data they decided was worth showing.

That’s fine. Until it isn’t.

PDQ’s PowerShell Scanner gives you a way around that wall. You can pull in the weird, specific, business-critical details that actually matter to your environment — not just whatever comes in the box.

Need to check BitLocker status? Audit certificate health? Find sketchy scheduled tasks? Track battery degradation before it turns into a ticket? Pull Windows Event Log errors, mapped drives, Defender status, browser extensions, VS Code extensions, or pass/fail config checks across your fleet?

Write the PowerShell, scan for it, bring it into PDQ, and use it like the rest of your inventory data.

A good AI support assistant should feel like a competent teammate.

Quietly useful. Context-aware. Clear about what it knows. Even clearer about what it doesn’t.

The assistant in this Reddit story was … not that.

A company added AI to its ticketing workflow. On paper, smart move. In practice, the backlog got worse, the advice got strange, and the humans had to clean up the mess.

Good AI supports the team.

Bad AI becomes the ticket.
