Let's talk about Akwɛnor Division

The Akwenor Division is one of the
original six divisions of Manya Klo, being
home to the Okumo, one of the priestly
elites. The Okumo is often regarded as
first among equals in the traditional
administration of the Krobo state,
particularly before the rise of military
leadership and the institution of
chieftaincy. As a spiritual and cultural
leader, the Okumo played a central role
in shaping the early governance and
religious practices of the Krobo people.
The Akwenor Division is made up of
seven clans, each led by their respective
chiefs (Asafoatseme) and queen mothers
(Asafoanyeme), who continue to uphold
the customs and values of their
ancestors. These clans not only represent
the social and political structure of the
division but also contribute to its cultural
richness and diversity. The seven clans
are Asemdua Tɛhe (also known as
Okumo Piɛm), Asemdua Tsawepiɛnya,
Akwenor Wekpɛti, Akwenor Masi, Sainya,
Abuɛtɛnya, and Akwenor Atotsonya.
The people of Akwenor can be found in
various key settlements, including
Mampong, Kpongunor, and Atotsonya.
These communities remain vibrant
centers of Krobo cultural heritage, where
traditional practices, ceremonies, and
festivals continue to be observed. The
presence of the Okumo highlights the
enduring importance of the Akwenor
Division within the broader Krobo state.

Through their continued observance of
ancient traditions, the people of Akwenor
maintain a strong connection to their past,
ensuring that the legacy of their forebears is
preserved for future generations. The
division’s rich history of spiritual leadership
and its clans’ contributions to the
governance of the Krobo state make it a
crucial part of the Krobo identity.
