SPACESHIPS
What can I say about Bloodline Fest?
It's always been home for us. Our first show was at the Well, twelve and a half years ago. We've played shows with most of the bands on the lineup. Most of us have been part of the organizational team. Most of us play multiple sets at the fest. It is as centralized a gathering of our closest friends that we can find.
And that's what makes this year's Bloodline so special. Because what better place is there to see off our dear friends Ben and Bret as they step out of SPACESHIPS?
At that first show, Ben was on drums. Since, he's played bass, keys, guitar, and saxophone.
Accordion once I think? Maybe trumpet? The man is a savant. He has brought aspects of the songs I'd never have seen into focus.
Twenty years ago, I worked at a youth group in Bremen, and Bret was my bass player. We bonded quickly and deeply, and ten years ago when we needed a fill in for Ben, I reached out.
Eight years ago after a few more fill ins, we invited him to join full time. He's brought the bone crushing heaviness I always wanted to harness but didn't know how. He's pushed me as a writer and producer. Some of my favorite memories have been the long talks we've had driving to shows or sharing hotels of while we replace the brakes on my van.
I've said many times that they are my favorite to play with, and that's true. No one can replace them, so for the time being no one will. I've got a lot on my plate, but once that clears up I'm plugging in every damn thing in my house and making a record with Devin. We're gonna let it get weird. But until then, we're going back into hibernation.
See you real soon.

We can’t believe that is a week away. This is always a special fest for us, and this year it is especially so: this will be our last show with our dear friends Ben and Bret. Life is long and filled with surprises, and it’s more than a little surprising that we’ve been able to play together for such a long time—8 years for Bret, 13 for Ben. I don’t take one day of that time for granted.
We’ll be back—eventually, and perhaps unrecognizably—but this show will be your last chance in a while to see us.
We play 8 at Saturday. We hope to see you there—more than usual.
