Natural disasters like the LA wildfires can be overwhelming for kids. We can support them by help them process their emotions, feel a sense of control, and find ways to make a positive impact. Involving children in community support activities can help kids feel less anxious and scared. π
π Expert Tip: Dr. Tamar Kahane, a licensed clinical psychologist, emphasizes the importance of honesty and validation: βStart by acknowledging and validating their feelings and the reality. It is scary. Itβs not your job to pretend that everything is okay when itβs not.β
π Meet Ireland, age 9! She created a brainstorm map to process her emotions, listing ways to feel better and how she could help the community. π‘ Parents can use this idea to help their kids understand and express their feelings.
πΉ More Ways to Support:
1. Peanut Butter Challenge: Donate jars of peanut butter to food banks! Peanut butter is high in protein and can help families in need. Resources are on our website to run this Service Project. π₯
2. Donate to nonprofits: Contribute to organizations helping fire victims. Check out the link in our bio for a link to a campaign with vetted nonptofits to choose from. Kids can demonstrate ownership over where they want their dollar to impact.
π Parents: Create a brainstorm map with your child to:
β’ Write down feelings.
β’ Find actions they can take to feel empowered, like donating supplies, volunteering, or creating a community support card.
Together, we can show kids how to take action and help their community through tough times! πͺπ
