The first air conditioners created used toxic or flammable gases, such as ammonia, methyl chloride, or propane, all or which were very dangerous if leaked. Fortunately, in 1928, Thomas Midgley Jr. created the first non-flammable, non-toxic chlorofluorocarbon gas, known as "Freon."
