Every bridge builder has studied the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Why? Shortly after it opened in 1940, it was nicknamed “Galloping Gertie,” because wind and vehicle vibration made the narrow bridge ripple and sway. Within three months, the twisting and rolling forces destroyed the bridge.
