In 1777 the United States had a flag but no design.
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress made a simple but powerful decision:
“Resolved, That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars…”
That was it. No layout. No exact design.
At our June 13 event we'll be displaying historical U.S. flags generously donated by Colonial Flag. You get to see for yourself the symbols of the early Independent Colonies.
In the mean time here's something to ponder: What would the stars and stripes meant to you in 1777: hope, rebellion, or risk?
Come explore the answer

Betsy Ross had an Uncle who signed the Declaration of Independence?
in 1730, George Ross is born. He served for a dozen years as Pennsylvania’s Crown Prosecutor. However, Ross embraced the notion of independence and did not hesitate to sign the Declaration. Ironically, he is far less well known than his nephew John’s wife, Betsy Griscom Ross, who has gone down in history as the seamstress who sewed the first American flag.
