This is so true, but to be accurate about this almost no specific address information exists on the 1840 Census. You can figure out the enumerator's route (sometimes), and see who the family's neighbors were, but that's about it -- until at least 1880. So don't feel too bad if you can't go back that far.

The 1950 Federal Census will be formally released to the public in April. However, indexing all the information so that we can all use it for research will take longer. If you were born between 1940 and 1950 this will likely be the first census in which you can see yourself listed. The National Archives has a great page on their website that details the questions asked on that census. I'm posting the link here. As I learn more about when various databases will have the material available, I will certainly pass it along!

Census data is a hugely critical resource in learning about our ancestors, but can also be challenging when we try to understand what they were saying about themselves when the census taker came calling. Betty White's passing reminded many of us of this priceless SNL skit in 2013 with Tina Fey as a census enumerator and Betty White as a challenging respondent.

Census Taker vs. Old Lady - SNL A census taker (Tina Fey) faces a woman (Betty White) with confusing answers to her most basic questions. [Season 35, 2010] to SNL: https://goo....
