The three men who were arrested during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation that resulted in the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo said a federal officer fired at them almost immediately after exiting his vehicle and that at no point did Salgado Araujo veer the vehicle in his direction. "All of them reiterated that there were never any ICE agents in front of the van. They came in and started shooting from the sides," said their immigration attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra. A Trump administration official who spoke to The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity said the ICE officers were not wearing body cameras during the traffic stop that resulted in Tuesday's shooting.

In recent weeks, the Supreme Court issued monumental decisions on birthright citizenship, asylum, and temporary protected status, but advocates also discovered a quieter shift in the immigration landscape. The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) was combing through an interim final rule from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services last week when they caught an apparent change to the administration's asylum policy. The Trump administration deleted the requirement that the government process asylum seekers' initial work permits within 30 days, which allows immigrants to legally work for U.S. employers while their asylum applications are pending. Upon this discovery, ASAP issued a public comment and filed a new lawsuit against the administration. The apparent change would be major since under the proposed policy, asylum seekers could essentially be waiting in limbo indefinitely.
