Did you know that Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States according to juneteenth.com? President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. However, it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865, two and a half years later, that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the war had ended and the enslaved were free. June 19th became a day of celebration, coined “Juneteenth.” Along with African American freedom, Juneteenth also celebrates African American achievement with a focus on education, self-development, and respect for all cultures.
