Text: Joshua 1:1-2 NKJV
[1] After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: [2] “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel."
In Joshua 1 we find Israel at the time of transition from mourning to movement. Moses had died and his death had created a huge leadership vacuum. For 30 days Israel was mourning Moses. Then God came to Joshua and commissioned him for leadership. It was time to transition from mourning to moving forward with Joshua as the new leader.
Beloved, some of us remain stuck in the graveyard of loss. We mourn lost relationships, lost jobs, lost opportunities, lost glory. But God does not want us to be stuck in the past forever mourning what we have lost. A time comes when God wants us to transition from Moses to Joshua. He wants us to move on with new opportunities and new hope. So God gives us a new assignment. And when the assignment comes, we must be prepared emotionally and spiritually to move on. There is a time for mourning and a time to move.
In verse 3 God assures Joshua, "Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses." Joshua 1:3 NKJV.
God had already won the battle and the land Joshua and Israel were going to posess. Thus he assured Joshua that he would possess the land. But success would not come on a silver plate. Success and possession of the land would only come when Joshua stepped out. Beloved God has promised us success. But we have to step out and take action. And sometimes God gives territories that are already occupied by others. Therefore, we must be able to still step up in faith and courageously possess the territory.
In verse 5, God assures Joshua as he is stepping out that, "No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you." Joshua 1:5 NKJV.
The same God who spoke to Moses face to face, the same God who granted Moses victory was going to be with Joshua. Joshua was facing the intimidation of taking up the new role but God promised him the He was going to be with him. Sometimes when we are given new assignments we feel intimidated and we ask ourselves, 'Am I capable of this new role? Am I old enough? Can I adequately fill the gap left by the previous leader?" But God does not expect you to be exactly like other great leaders. He wants you to be yourself and lead by His guidance using the unique talents and abilities He has given you. So lead on child of God, He is with you.
In Joshua 1:6-7, God encourages Joshua,
"[6] Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. [7] Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go."
At this point Israel had two great barriers before they could possess the land; the Jordan river and the city of Jericoh. These were not easy barriers to overcome yet Joshua was taking up leadership at such a difficult time. It is easy to lead during a time of peace and prosperity but sometimes God elevates us to leadership during moments of challenge. Sometimes elevation means walking into a new battle. But God assures us of His presence and help. However, the presence of God does not mean that He will take away the challenges and the battles. The battles will be there but keep your eyes on God.
In verse 8, God gives Joshua the formula: "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." Joshua 1:8 NKJV.
God gives His word to Joshua as the formula for guidance and success. Meditate on the book of the law. In short, feed your faith with the Word and suppress your doubts. The blue print for success from God is the Bible.
In verse 9 God repeats, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NKJV.
In every assignment God has given you, be strong and courageous. He will be with you. He will back you up. Whatever He has assigned you to do this year, take courage because God has ordered your steps in the new assignment. He will be with you all the way.
